World liver day 2024: Sensitization on liver health

To raise awareness about liver health and the importance of nutrition in maintaining a healthy liver and overall wellbeing, the J&A Oben Foundation’s wellness center gave a talk on nutrition and liver health to the Catholic Men Association (CMA) of the St. Peter and Paul Anglophone Parish Simbock. This as part of their activities to commemorate 2024 World Liver Day. This activity took place on Saturday, 20th April, 2024.

The objective of this talk was to educate men on the key role of nutrition in the prevention and management of liver diseases. Men were the point of focus because research have shown that men are more susceptible to liver diseases than women.

In her speech, Mrs. Crista Arrey Tabi, the head nutritionist at the J&A Oben Foundation, presented the important roles the liver plays in the body, common signs of liver diseases, liver-related diseases, and ways through which they can be prevented and managed.

She highlighted the crucial role that nutrition plays in supporting liver function. Participants learned about the impact of unhealthy dietary habits, such as excessive consumption of processed foods, fatty and fried foods, junk foods, sugary beverages, and alcohol, on liver health. The nutritionist empathized on the importance of incorporating nutrient-rich foods, such as fruits and vegetables; whole grains and cereals; lean proteins such as lean fish, lean meat, beans, and peas; and healthy fats like olive oil and red palm oil into daily meals to promote liver detoxification and reduce the risk of liver-related diseases such as fatty liver diseases, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, inflammation of the liver (hepatitis), liver cirrhosis, and end-stage liver failure. “Nutrition walks with physical activity. Practice moderate physical activity regularly and drink at least 1.5 liters of water daily,” she said.
